QUT aims to increase the access, participation and successful outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in conjunction with overall development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander resources, facilities, staffing and curricula.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Committee is responsible to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and acts as the major policy developing body within the University on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues. The Committee:

  • recommends policy initiatives in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander area and monitors the implementation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander initiatives and programs within the University
  • advises on the implications for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education of University academic policies and national developments in higher education
  • consults with and advises appropriate committees and officers of the University on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues
  • coordinates advice on all existing provisions, arrangements and programs relating to the education and welfare of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
  • proposes developments and initiatives within the University to improve and extend the range of provisions for and opportunities available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
  • consults widely within the University and with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and other relevant organisations to identify emergent needs and opportunities in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture/studies available in all course offerings and curriculum areas
  • provides advice and recommends on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Strategy and the Employment Strategy and other policies, plans and programs as appropriate to the advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander objectives
  • proposes staff development initiatives across the University to promote understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues.
