Reconciliation Week 2007

Over 1500 people attended Reconciliation Week activities across all campuses. Activities included traditional dances, information tents, Sea of Hands and petitions to Close the Gap on Indigenous Health.

The QUT Equity Section, in conjunction with Oxfam Australia, held a forum on Tuesday May 29 at the KG Amphitheatre to discuss current issues in Indigenous Health and strategies to address these issues.

Did you know that -

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infant mortality is three times the rate of non-Indigenous Australian infants.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders still live 17 years less than non-Indigenous Australians
  • an Indigenous baby born in Australia is statistically more likely to have a shorter life than a child born in remote rural Bangladesh or Nigeria
  • Research from the USA, New Zealand and Canada shows that the mortality rates of Indigenous peoples can be reduced by 30 per cent in tens years or less with adequate funding for services such as primary health care
