Commitment
QUT's Reconciliation Statement contains the following commitment in relation
to employment.
In consultation with Indigenous Australian people, QUT will:
Progress
-
The Indigenous Australian Employment and Career Development Strategy
was launched in July 2002. Strategy objectives include increasing
employment of Indigenous Australians to 2.6% of University staff during
2002 - 2007; and providing support for Indigenous Australians to enhance
Indigenous employment and retention rates at QUT. For more information
refer to the QUT media release, 'QUT
launches Indigenous employment strategy' and the Indigenous
Australian Employment and Career Development Strategy web site.
-
In 2004, QUT became one of the first universities in Australia to
sign up to an initiative promoting the employment of Indigenous Australians.
The Structured Employment and Training Program (STEP) was officially
launched on April 21, 2004. Under STEP, university departments are
given incentives to employ Indigenous people - including a proportion
of wages being paid by the Department of Employment and Workplace
Relations.
Employees are provided with opportunities to develop work skills both
on and off the job along with access to mentoring, and other support
programs. And for employers there is the chance to receive cross-cultural
training to enhance supervisory management skills.
The number of Indigenous people employed at QUT has risen to 35 in
2005.
-
In November 2002 an agreement was signed between Queensland University
of Technology and the Aboriginal Council of Elders' Community Employment
Development Project (CDEP). The agreement aims at improving co-operation
between the two organisations in order to achieve improved training
and employment opportunities for Indigenous people.
-
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) developed with ATSIC-SEQ included
collaboration in the area of Indigenous employment. The formal review
of the MOU with ATSIC-SEQ was deferred due to the change of Commonwealth
Government policy and its intervention in disbanding ATSIC. The new
SEQ-ATSIS Regional Council has recently launched its regional plan
and discussions will be held for further employment activities in
the context of the plan. For more information on QUT’s original
MOU with ATSIC refer to the QUT media release, 'QUT
signs agreement with ATSIC'.
-
In September 2001, the University appointed a Project Officer (Indigenous
Employment and Career Development), located in the Human Resources
Department. The Project Officer worked closely with the Working Party
and consulted across the University to develop the Indigenous Australian
Employment and Career Development Strategy.
-
An Indigenous Employment Working Party was established early in
2001 to develop and oversee the implementation of an Indigenous Australian
Employment and Career Development Strategy. The Working Party comprises
representatives from Indigenous staff, Oodgeroo Unit, Equity Section,
Human Resources Department, faculties and unions.
